This Genius Lives In An 8-Foot Box To Save Money

When Peter Berkowitz moved to San Francisco to pursue his dreams of becoming an artist/illustrator he was shocked by the lack of affordable housing. He quickly realized people do just about anything to make ends meet living in one of the most expensive cities in the world, like sleeping on couches or sharing rooms.

Berkowitz decided to rely on his creativity in order to make it in San Fran, and so he built an 8–foot box with a little help from his friends.

The pod sits in the living room of a three-bedroom apartment that Berkowitz shares with 4 other people. While his roommates pay around $800 each for their bedrooms, Berkowitz only pays $400 for his share. Image: Peter Berkowitz

Despite the low priced rent and seemingly tight quarters Berkowitz writes, “It’s the coziest bedroom I’ve ever had. It’s the only bed I’ve had with a fold-down desk, a slanted + cushioned backboard, and uniformly ideal light for reading.”

It cost around $1,300 to build the pod, including all materials.

“People are typically surprised that I would want to live in a pod, but I think they tend to underestimate how pleasant a pod can be if it’s designed smartly.”

“It is crazy, but only crazy to the extent that the housing market is crazy. I think it’s a smart solution to the situation that happens to work for me and may work for other people.”
