‘Pokémon Go’ Players Trapped by Rising Tide on Island, Barely Escape

Ever since Pokémon Go launched, one thing has become clear, there is absolutely nowhere players won’t go to find the Pokémon they seek.

Many players have gotten themselves into tricky situations because of their persistence in trying to (gotta) catch ’em all. Players have even risked their lives, such as the latest group of teens who got way too into the game for their own good.

Six teens decided it’d be a great idea to go offshore to find water dwelling Pokémon on Thursday evening. Birnbeck Island, located south of Wales in the UK, was their destination. The thing is, Birnbeck Island has no safe access to the mainland once the tide rolls in.

They were stranded and all the water Pokémon in the world could save them.

Milford Haven coastguard received a distress call about the stranded teens and alerted Britain’s volunteer Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The RLNI sent out a rescue crew, which spotted two boys wading through rapidly rising water toward the shore.

The other four boys scrambled back to shore along a condemned pier walkway that’s incredibly unsafe.

“In Weston the tide comes in so quickly, in seconds you can be in life-threatening danger,” said lifeboat crew member Chris Lyons. “Please, if you do see a Pokémon either on the rocks or in the muddy areas of Weston bay, don’t put yourself into a position where you could become stuck.”

No one was injured during the incident.

“It is great to see people getting out and about enjoying themselves, however, putting your life in danger trying to catch Pokémon is extremely irresponsible,” Lyons continued.

“The water is unforgiving, it doesn’t give you a second chance whereas a game will.”

I can think of much stronger word for the idiocy many people have shown during their attempts to find Pokémon. Between players causing car crashes, entering restricted nuclear power plant evacuation zones and illegally crossing boarders.

A Pikachu ain’t worth risking your life for.
