There Will Be Blood: Why The Streets Of This Town Turned Into Rivers Of Blood

What do you get when you combine mass animal sacrifices, heavy rain and a poor drainage system? Streets filled with rivers of blood – at least, that’s the case in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a city of more than 10 million people.

Large-scale animal sacrifices for the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha – the Feast of sacrifice, which is marked by slaughtering livestock – gave way to blood filled streets straight out of a horror movie after heavy rain hit Bangladesh’s capital.

The point of the sacrificed animals is that they’re shared among family, friends and the poor, in an attempt to promote social harmony.

There are designated areas for the slaughters, but heavy flooding made the use of those areas impossible. As a result, residents slaughtered the animals wherever they could, parking lots, garages, you name it. The lack of controlled slaughter resulted in an unforeseen outcome – rivers of blood.

“I felt I was walking through a post-apocalyptic neighbourhood,” said Atish Saha, an artist in Dhaka. “To be honest, I was scared. It was an image of mass violence that shouldn’t ever be experienced.”

Most of the water had receded by morning, but the red hue could still be seen on dirt roads, and animal entrails littered some areas.
