Mythical “TUNICORN” Caught In Australia

It’s time to make room in your exclusive club Mr. Abominable Snowman, Big Foot, chupacabras, gremlins, Mr. (or maybe Mrs.) Loch Ness Monster, Skunk Ape, and the (now boring) land dwelling unicorns.

Meet the world’s first Tunicorn, the ocean’s version of its land-based cousin, the unicorn.

You’ve never heard of the Tunicorn? It was just another mythological creature until Australian fisherman, Kim Haskell, reeled in an 88-pound dogtooth tuna.

This wasn’t an average tuna: this tuna was the mythical Tunicorn. It had a giant horn sticking out of it’s head and was completely healthy.

Haskell was fishing with his brother, Jamie, and nephew, Christopher, on the outer reef just out of Cookstown Queensland. “Looked almost too perfectly centred [sic] and would not have believed it if we hadn’t caught it ourselves. Probably the strangest thing I have ever found inside a fish. ”

For the cynical disbelievers, they believe it was actually a souvenir from a run-in with an overly aggressive sailfish – possibly during a feeding frenzy on a bait ball. For the rest of us dreamers, we thank you, Mr. Haskell, for capturing this amazing unicorn (and making sure to get a photo)!

From Jamie Haskell: "Here is a Dog Tooth Tuna caught on the outer reef just out of Cooktown Queensland with Marlin spike embedded in it's head. It was totally healed so must have been in it for a while. We were wondering if the spike entered through the mouth because the thin bit was at the end. Looked almost too perfectly centred and would not have believed it if we hadn't caught it ourselves. Probably the strangest thing I have ever found inside a fish. Has anyone else seen such a thing?"
