Although this fight between a seal and an octopus lasted for about 20 minutes, it’s clear it was a one-sided encounter.
Conner Stapley captured footage of a seal manhandling an octopus while on a kayaking tour in Kaikoura, in New Zealand’s South Island, while leading a group of three kayakers.
“It is quite rare to see something like this and rarer at this time of day – normally you would see New Zealand fur seals feeding in the evenings,” said Stapley.
“I noticed a big flock of sea birds just congregating nearby – that is normally a sign there is something happening – and then the fight began.”
