VIDEO: Dolphins Chew On Pufferfish To Get High

It looks like people aren’t the only ones who abuse narcotics. Apparently, dolphins chew on pufferfish in order to get high. While pufferfish release a neurotoxin that can kill, in small doses the effects are very similar to a narcotic and is sometimes taken advantage of by dolphins.

“After chewing the puffer gently and passing it round, they began acting most peculiarly, hanging around with their noses at the surface as if fascinated by their own reflection,” Rob Pilley, a zoologist on the BBC documentary miniseries “Dolphins: Spy in the Pod” said of the dolphins.

Next time you see a pod of dolphins acting bizarrely, they just might be passing the puffer around.
