This diving duo set out to test their new filing gear and find some sea turtles while they were at it. What they found was quite a bit bigger and much more surprising.
Out of nowhere, two humpback whales appear to the side of the divers. The divers, Nicholls and Curtis, both work for whale watching companies.
Even with their many years of experience, this was a first for them.
“In 10 years I have never seen this type of behaviour for whales with a boat, let alone with us in the water,” Nicholls said.
“Their movements were so gentle and so slow, almost like they were like ‘Oh, I don’t want to hurt my new friends’,” said Curtis in an interview.
The two ended up being followed by the whales for several hours. They were worried posting the footage may encourage tourists to seek out close encounters with wild animals, but they figured their experience was too incredible not to share.
“It was like hanging out with Mother Nature. My heart was so full of love at that moment,” Curtis said.
