Why is it that aquariums around the world have managed to house whale sharks, yet they don’t have a great white? It turns out the apex predator doesn’t fare well once put in captivity. Between transport issues, tank size and diet, there have been many factors that make it nearly impossible to keep a white shark alive.

Despite these difficulties, the Monterey Bay Aquarium managed to keep a young great white shark alive for six months before releasing it. Here’s how they managed to do it and why they had to let it go:
