Cyclists are about to have a new way to see the east coast. First conceived in 1991, the East Coast Greenway is set for completion in a few years. With its completion, it will become the nation’s longest bike path at 2,900-miles-long.
“It’s about seeing America at the right speed, where you can take in all of the culture around you,” Dennis Markatos-Soriano, the East Coast Greenway Alliance executive director, told City Lab. “And you don’t have a windshield between yourself and the community.”
The massive bike path will stretch from Calais, Maine, to Key West, Florida, taking riders through 16 states and 25 cities along the east coast.
Walkers, cyclists and runners will be able to travel along one continuous paved greenway, avoid of traffic, once it’s completed, according to the East Coast Greenway Alliance.
“Our route has been chosen to provide the traveler with an ever-changing, interesting and scenic landscape, whether urban, suburban, small town, industrial or rural,” the organization states on its website.
While the greenway has been under work since the early 90’s, it’s development has only recently picked up speed in the last year. With one-third of the greenway already built and each individual state being responsible for their own portion of the path, it won’t be long before this incredible path is full opporatinal.
