Parents of children at Holdheide Academy in Woodstock, Georgia, are upset after learning their children were taken to a local gun range on a field trip.
When reached for questioning, the school said the trip was all part of a lesson.
“This was a wonderful learning experience with a safety class before and after the guns were handled,” the owner of the school, Tammy Dorsten, said.
The trip came as a result of the children having recently learned about famous sharpshooter Annie Oakley and folk hero Davy Crockett.
Dorsten said that parents initially approved the field trip and they went to High Caliber Firearms gun range because they had a 1894 rifle like Oakley actually used.
Sean Jerguson also defended the trip but seemed confused as to what a field trip was and why Willis called it that.
“When you say field trip, I don’t know what that means. We’ve had a number of youth programs here. I wouldn’t know how to define a field trip. We have a number of private and home-school groups come into the store.”
“It was definitely a part of our Georgia-approved curriculum,” said Dorsten.
Unsurprisingly, the school received serious backlash from local parents and other people across the country who claimed it wasn’t acceptable and it was dangerous.
“We are currently investigating to determine what children were involved in the field trip and whether it is within DECAL’s jurisdiction to take appropriate actions.”
