Penny Bielich encountered something pretty insane while diving off the coast of Komodo Island in Indonesia. She was exploring the Gili Lawa diving site when she spotted something big and alien-like swimming in the water.
It turned out what she was seeing was a megamouth shark, which is rare and similar to a whale shark. They were first discovered in 1976 in Oahu and are identifiable by their massive mouth and very small teeth.
There have only been 100 megamouth sharks that have been discovered since they were discovered 41 years ago. Since there is so little information on them due to their small numbers, the species is listed as “data deficient” according to the International Union for Conservation.
