Getting in the water when there’s a 12′ foot tiger shark mere feet away is impressive enough. When you spear a cobia that’s right on top of said tiger shark? That’ just pure insanity.
Via Joey Antonelli:
We launched the boat around noon today. The plan was to catch Cobia off Manta Rays. On the way out we found a school of 40″+ on the surface several miles offshore. That would have been a cool enough surprise, but it got better. We found plenty of rays, but only a few short Cobia.
While passing by another boat that was fishing on what we thought was a big barrel they hollered at us telling us there was a big Tiger Shark. The big barrel ended up being a full grown Sea Turtle that the shark was eating for lunch. To make things even cooler, there was a Cobia on the shark that the guys in the other boat said wouldn’t eat anything. I yelled, half kidding, “Want us to shoot it?”… Well that is what we did.
The vis was very poor and we couldn’t see the shark until it was right on us. The Cobia swam straight up to me soon as we got in the water. I took a shot on it and completely missed. The under water pictures are from the GoPro that was on Nick Furro’s head. He sealed the deal with a very solid Cobia. I’ve never expierenced anything like this. The shark was easily 10′ long, I’m leaning more towards 12′.
