A man who managed to save his wife from a strong rip current in the waters off Miami Beach Sunday died after getting pulled under, according to Miami Beach Fire Rescue.
The 34-year-old man and his wife, who were visiting from Fort Myers, were swimming in the ocean near 23rd Street at 2 p.m., Miami Beach Fire Rescue Capt. Charlton Price said. Their names were not released Sunday.
“He was able to help her, but he just wasn’t able to get out,” Price said.
Price said lifeguards were busy Sunday rescuing swimmers from strong currents, and there was a red flag warning swimmers of the risk.
The man — who was not breathing — was pulled from the water at the same time other people who got caught in the currents were rescued, Price said. No one else was injured.
The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he died.
National Weather Service meteorologist Chuck Caracozza said strong easterly winds led to a high risk of rip currents.
