If you were to ever be lucky enough to spot a sleeping sperm whale, there’s a good chance you’d be confused about what you’re seeing. That’s because sperm whales actually sleep vertically underwater.
This strange behavior was first witnessed in 2008 when a pod of sperm whales were spotted floating motionless and vertically. The whales would be completely motionless for 15 to 20 minutes and wouldn’t even breath during these periods.
It may look like some strange whale graveyard, but they’re just trying to catch a few z’s.
