If you run across an island on your next offshore fishing trip that wasn’t there the last time you went out, it’d be a good idea to not claim it as your own private island and set up an island oasis. Chances are what you found is a formation created by a mud volcano, similar to the one discovered off the Pakistan coast in 2013.
It functions much like a regular volcano, except a release of methane forces tons of mud through Earth’s surface, instead of molten hot lava. In the case of this mud formation, it was almost completely gone within a year.
