Many were left wondering exactly what was going on when a river in Norilsk, Russia suddenly turned blood red. Photos showing the bloody looking river were captured and posted to Instagram by nearby residents yesterday.

The exact cause of the change hasn’t been confirmed, but it is believed to be the result of a leaking slurry pipe from a nickel factory on the river. The river has actually changed color several times before due to the factory, though they are denying the claims.
Though the factory denies the claims, Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology has ordered and investigation to confirm the source.
