A boating accident is being investigated by Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife officials after a father was killed and his son was critically injured on Lake Cumberland.
Donnie Flynn, 70, and his son Derek Flynn struck a rock embankment and were thrown from the boat. Donnie died at the scene and Derek, who is a Somerset Police sergeant, was taken to UK Hospital for injuries that include a fractured pelvis.
The father and sone were fishing a benefit tournament to help a fellow officer’s special needs son.
Police were called around 4 a.m. when the two men didn’t return to shore. Their boat was found capsized near an embankment. It’s believed dense fog played a major factor in the accident.
“Every fisherman that we spoke to … commented on how foggy it was and that they were nervous about the fog,” said Sgt. Chris King, with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.
“To know they were out doing something to benefit someone, it’s a horrible thing,” King continued.
