Four men in a Lancha boat were found with 164 illegally caught red snapper by the United States Coast Guard off South Padre Island in federal waters. The red snapper, which weighed in at 320 pounds, were seized along with the crews illegal fishing gear. The fishermen were also detained.
Lancha boats are often used for illegal fishing in U.S. waters along the Mexico border, according to the US Coast Guard.
“A lancha is a Mexican fishing boat that is approximately 20-30 feet long with a slender profile, typically has one outboard motor, is capable of traveling at speeds exceeding 30 miles per hour, and is frequently used to fish illegally in the United States’ Exclusive Economic Zone near the U.S./Mexico border. “
