The ‘Cajun Navy’ Heads to Help Flooded Texas

Whenever Hurricane Harvey hit Texas and brought serious rain with it, the Cajun Navy didn’t wait for people to ask for help, they just went. They brought anything and everything with them that would help them reach and help those who needed it most. Airboats, duck boat, skiffs and kayaks followed in tow as they arrived — if it floated, they brought it.

They were initially formed during Hurrican Katrinaike, and just like in many disasters that have hit the country since, these volunteers who mainly organized through Facebook lent their help.

It’s estimated that hundreds of members of the Cajun Navy have left Louisiana to offer relief to those in Texas so far.

“They weren’t even asked,” says Billy Nungesser, the Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana. “They just hooked up their boats and headed out to go help their neighbors. These are unbelievable acts of kindness. The goodwill of American citizens never ceases to amaze me.”
