A picture taken by Ethan Tipper of a prehistoric-looking creature that washed up on the banks of a lake in Australia has social media divided on what animal it exactly is. Some claim it is a large hairtail while others think it’s potentially photoshopped.

Mark McGrouther, an Australian Museum fish collector, may have ended the debate early – stating he thinks it’s a pike eel in the photo.

Pike eel’s tend to be a pain to fishermen who snag the strange looking creatures. They are known for being difficult to catch and damaging fishing equipment in the process.

“This is the first time I have ever seen one of them in the flesh,” he said. “I suspect it was caught and discarded by fisherman who got more than they bargained for when they tried to reel it in.”
