Two Marathon Runners Gored After Angry Mule Deer Interrupts Race

We’re pretty sure typical marathon training doesn’t involve fighting off an over-aggressive buck to avoid being gored.

Two men found themselves in a situation where that knowledge could’ve been useful during a recent marathon in the Porcupine Bay area in Davenport, Washington. At some point in the race, an aggressive mule deer entered the roadway and interrupted the flow of runners.

This is one of the last situations you want to find yourself in, but with deer season starting up, this won’t be the last case of a massive buck trying to ruin everyone’s day by wandering somewhere it shouldn’t.

This is what happened according to Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Police:

“Officer Wood received a report from a man who was participating in a marathon in the Porcupine Bay area over the weekend. The subject stated a mule deer buck entered the roadway where the people were running. The buck acted in an aggressive manner and began chasing some of the runners.

Two men who were manning a water station tried to chase the buck away but it turned and began attacking them. Both men were gored by the buck (one on the hand and the other on the leg). The buck was shot and a local hunter was allowed to tag and take the deer. Both injured people had to seek medical treatment at the Davenport Hospital.”
