It’s been a long time since anyone has spotted a Cropan’s boa in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil – 64 years to be exact. Last seen in the area in 1953, this Brazilian boa has only been spotted less than a half dozen times in the last 60-plus years.
Due to how impossible these snakes were to come by, it was nearly impossible to learn anything about them. Since the only specimen scientists had available to study was dead, they needed to find one and capture it.
After launching a drive to find one in October 2016, they finally had success in January when a farmer found and trapped a 5.5-foot long Cropan’s female. They then fitted the boa with a tracker and will use the information they collect to gain all sorts of new information into the rare and endangered species.
