Goat farts on plane, causes emergency landing

A fart caused a Singapore Airlines cargo plane to have to land early as it was on its way to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from Adelaide, Australia. The culprit? 2,186 goats.

There was no evidence of fire or smoke when the Boeing 747 was inspected, just a lot of goats who may or may not have had one too many cans of beans. Like a sheep or a cow, a goat has four stomach – meaning it can produce fumes capable of taking paint off walls.

The average sheep produces 7.92 kg of methane a year, on average. Assuming that a sheep and a goat produce the same amount of methane, 2,186 goats would have produced 1.97 kg of methane per hour over the five hours they were in cargo.

Next time a smoke detector goes off, assume there may be a fire – but it may just be a goat who let one slip.
