Cecil the Lion Hunting Guide in Prison After Hunting Rare Antelope

After surviving the scandal that resulted in the death of Cecil the Lion, hunting guide Headman Sibana probably thought his hard times were behind him. Unfortunately for the hunter, he was arrested last Thursday after a tip connected him with illegally hunting an endangered antelope.

Roan antelope are seldom seen in national parks or conservancies in sub Saharan Africa. The Kruger National Park, which is the largest conservancy in the region, has only around 70 of the rare creatures left.

Sibana worked for Zimbabwe’s park’s authority and actually “helped write some of the wildlife laws in Zimbabwe,” according to a former and unnamed colleague.

He is being kept in prison and will only be able to apply for bail from the High Court due to the severity of his offense. Hunting this specific antelope holds a maximum sentence of nine years in prison.
