This is probably the last sound anyone expected to come from a mountain lion. Being one of the last animals we’d ever want to run into in the wild, this cougar sounds more like a parakeet in a helium factory than a giant cat that could kill us in two seconds flat.
The footage offers a rare look into the vocal ability that cougars have. It’s incredibly surprising to witness, but there are a lot of sounds cougars make past their signature roar – at least from what movies would have us believe – even one’s that don’t sound intimidating wouldn’t scare off a mouse.
Next time you’re out in cougar county and you think you hear a small animal squeaking at you, you’d best hope it’s not a staring eyeing you down.
