Nancy Smith of St. Petersburg got more than bad weather from Tropical Storm Colin, she also got a couple of surprise visitors. What she discovered was a pair of manatees feeding on her grass in her backyard, which she recorded and posted to her Instagram.
“Because of the rain, the tide was up over the seawall about a foot,” she wrote. “The water was moving around and I thought maybe I’d get lucky and see a manatee.”
She certainly got what she wanted when a manatee climbed the sea wall and found its way into her backyard where it started eating recently mowed grass.
The manatees came back the next day and continued their feast.
The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission warns that they have had to rescue several manatees from ponds and golf courses due to powerful storms like Colin.
