Trails were closed off at Pinnacle Park in Jackson County, North Carolina, after a runner had their foot impaled by a nail someone had intentionally placed in the area. This was just one of at least 60 spikes that were recovered in the area.
The nails were measured four-inches and were hammered into various places, including roots and logs to increase their chances of causing injury.
“We’re literally blowing every leaf off trail, and following behind with metal detectors. It was a deliberate effort,” said Brian Barwatt, an engineer for the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Fortunately, no one else was injured by the nails, though someone did have one go through their shoe without injury.
It takes a real lowlife of a human-being to go out of their way to intentionally cause harm to others they’ve never even met.
