SeaWorld Owned Orca Beaches Itself Immediately After Performance as Audience Watches

It’s unclear what caused the behavior, but a captive orca at Loro Parque in Spain’s Canary Islands attempted to beach herself several times. She was filmed slumped over motionless for more than ten minutes after a performance.

This isn’t the first time the whale, named Morgan, has expressed odd behavior; she was filmed banging her head into part of a metal grate several weeks ago:

The whale is one of five other orcas that live at Loro Parque and are owned by SeaWorld.

Morgan was still laying out of the water as spectators stopped filming and got up to leave.

“Wild orcas remain constantly moving and even swim while sleeping, although a few populations occasionally beach themselves for a short period while hunting, according to Daily Mail.

The problem with whales beaching themselves for too long isn’t that they’ll die from lack of water necessarily. By beaching themselves for long periods of time, the weight of the whale can crush their internal organs if not supported by the buoyancy of water.
