Rick Clunn, who will turn 70 in July, had an impressive week. Not only did he win his 15th B.A.S.S. tournament, he became the oldest fisherman to win a B.A.S.S. tournament at 69. The tournament was centered at the St. Johns River, Clunn caught five bass on Sunday weighing 19 pounds during his tourney run at the Bassmaster Elite, following an incredible 31-7 pounds the day previous – which was the third-best five-bass limit of his career.
“I was certainly feeling some pressure after having such a big weight yesterday,” said Clunn, who beat second-place finisher, Greg Hackney, by 4 pounds.
Clunn’s biggest performance was on Saturday when he caught five bass at a weight of 31 pounds, 7 ounces – bumping him into first place and getting him the $100,000 check.
If you’re looking for a great fisherman who’s example to follow, you could do a lot worse than Clunn.
“Never accept that all of your accomplishments are in the past,” Clunn told reporters on Saturday. “Most of us go through a peak period. But when you start to lose that, you start to wonder. Maybe I don’t have as many great moments ahead, but I still have great moments to look forward to.”
Spoken like a true fisherman with a love for the sport.
