A man was fined $1,000 after stepping off the boardwalk in the Mammoth Hot Springs thermal area in Yellowstone National Park to get a water sample on Tuesday. The man, a Chinese national whose name was not released, will also have to pay a $30 court processing fee.
Park rangers learned of the incident from a witness who reported that the man had stepped of the boardwalk and walked around the off limits area.
When rangers found the man, he admitted he hadn’t read any of the information about safety measures in the park that had been given to him.
A federal violation notice was issued to the man for off boardwalk travel in a thermal are and will require a mandatory appearance in the Yellowstone Justice Center Court.
