After being given to a family friend in Cockermouth, Cumbria, England to help round sheep on a farm up north, a sheepdog named Pero decided enough was enough after four weeks of homesickness – he made a break for it on April 8 – and decided to go back to his original owners, Alan and Shan James, in Ceredigion.
“The farmer in Cockermouth was looking for a dog that could round sheep and follow a quad bike, and we thought Pero would be ideal for the job,” according to Shan James. “We told the farmer to take him away and see if he’d be willing to work for him on his farm up north. And so Pero left us at the beginning of March.”
The journey that ensued is both impressive and puzzling as Pero managed to find his way back to the James’s over the course of a 240 mile, 12 day journey.
Having been informed that Pero had run off and gone missing from the farm, the James family didn’t know what to expect.

“But then, last Wednesday evening, April 20, my husband Alan went out to check on the animals after supper and there was Pero on our doorstep,” according to Mrs James.
“It was a bit of a shock, and the dog was going crazy after seeing Alan. No-one called us to say that they’d dropped the dog off, and even though he has a microchip no-one’s been in touch either to say that they’ve found him.”
“It’s a total mystery as to how Pero has managed to find his way back to us. We know that dogs can find their way home, but 240 miles is a long way to travel.”
The family is just thankful for any help anyone gave Pero on his long journey home. Having showed up back home in good shape, they’re certain there were kind hearted individuals who helped him along the way.
Luckily for Pero, it doesn’t look like he’ll be making any long distance treks anytime soon as the James family plans to keep him jut where he is – home.
