There’s something in the water at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and it’s a 1,400-pound tiger shark named Chessie.
The massive tiger shark apparently loves the South Carolina coast, as she was caught and tagged last year in the same area by the same fisherman when she weighed 1,200 pounds. She didn’t stay put, however, she has traveled over 2,000 miles in the since first being tagged.
OCEARCH, the nonprofit responsible for the tracking project does so to learn about the migration of sharks over a period if time. Mary Lee, a 3,500-pound great white is their most famous tagged shark. she’s been on news stations several times as she swims along the East Coast.
Chip Michalove, the fisherman who caught Chessie both times, named her after the Chechessie river, which is nearby.
