Joseph Dupuis, 29, created his dream cabin in the woods, just 35 miles from Ottawa, Canada. This isn’t the standard log cabin that comes to mind for many – it’s built out of shipping containers – but it’s no less gorgeous to look at (from the inside).
Dupuis doesn’t just have a home that all of his friends envy – he constructed the whole thing for less than $20,000 and the three shipping containers he used were purchased at a bargain of a price at $3,400. At that price? Sign me up!
“I want to help as many people as I can get out of the pocket of big banks and make people more self-sufficient,” he told the Huffington Post. “I see my friends buying $400,000 houses and they’re in debt for the next 35 years. It’s pretty backwards—we don’t need these expensive homes and all this stuff we have in our lives.”
Built over the course of 3 months and 12+ hour days, he outfitted the cabin with a special heating and cooling system to help with the metal exterior. The floors are even kept heated, while a wood stove is utilized during the harsh winters. Everything is powered using solar energy collected from panels nearby.
Two other shipping containers on the property act as a garage and a storage unit. With plans to add a fourth container on top of the cabin – featuring a bedroom with a view of the stars – Dupuis says, ‘When I’m done with it, it will blow people’s minds.’
With plans to potentially sell the cabin since he’s no longer exclusively living at the location, now may be as good of a time as any to check it out of you happen to be near Ottawa.
If you happen upon random shipping containers while strolling through the woods outside Ottawa, you just may be in for a bigger surprise than you can imagine.
