A Venezuelan sailor has died after being attacked by a shark as he clung to the side of a rescue buoy following his boat capsizing near Aruba.
He who was one of seven Venezuelan men whose boat capsized near Aruba. Two other men died when the boat sank, and the other five survived the initial accident. The Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard said the man was just moments from safety when the attack took place.
In an a heartbreaking tale of unfortunate luck, spokesman Roderick Gouverneur said that the man was clinging to a rescue buoy when he was spotted by the coastguard helicopter, which lowered a rescuer to winch him to safety.
However, just as the rescuer was about to reach him, the man was attacked by a shark, suffering fatal injuries. They were able to pull the man from the water following the attack, but he died in route to the hospital. The seven men were traveling from Bonaire to Aruba to sell whiskey when the incident occurred.
