It’s not every day that an alligator climbs a fence and makes us wonder if it’s starting to have more in common with its smaller reptile cousins.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a gator make it over a fence, either.
Luckily, this gator seems to want to put his climbing to use for his country and not for an obstacle course show.
Christina Stewart, a Florida resident, didn’t waste time when she noticed climbing the fence. She quickly started recording as it made its way to the other side of the fence at Naval Air Station in Jacksonville.
The alligator climbs a fence like a pro, but its dismount could use some work — it bellyflops onto the ground right when it makes it over.
Florida rarely runs low on bizarre stories about its inhabitants. That’s even truer when the strange story involves a gator.
Don’t make any trouble and there won’t be any trouble
There aren’t any plans to remove the gator from the base as long as it doesn’t become a nuisance.
“If you are new to Florida or have been here for years, when you see water, assume an alligator could be in it. We have several on the base and they don’t respect our security measures,” officials at the naval base wrote on Facebook. “On the serious side, always be aware with small children and pets. Golfers be aware and watch where you stick your hands. Do not approach them ever!”
Alligators don’t just climb fences. It’s actually fairly common for them to climb trees, according to National Geographic.
“Even without any special anatomic adaptations for gripping branches, crocodiles often make their way up trees, sometimes going as high as the crown and out onto large limbs.”
Snakes in trees are one thing. Now we have to worry about a gator dropping on our head?
There really is no place like Florida.
