The wheel has remained relatively unchanged as far as its basic structure goes. It’s round and for the most part its shape stays the same throughout its use.
Until now.
NASA just created a completely new wheel that’s made with a nickel-titanium alloy. The way it’s constructed allows this super-elastic material to deform and regain its original shape. This helps it traverse rocky landscapes — specifically Mars.
That’s right, this wheel is only meant for rovers as a way to help them travel for longer distances while on missions. These tires will allow rovers to explore new areas while bearing up to 10 times the weight the Curiosity rovers wheels could hold.
