Footage captured by a diver shows a fish that has scientist confused as to exactly what it is that they’re seeing. They first thought it may have been a stingfish, from the stonefish family, which is considered to be the most venomous fish in the world.
The fish is actually using its lower pectoral fins to walk along the ocean floor and is most likely hunting when it walks around like this as it uses taste buds on each free pectoral fin ray to track its food.
Scientist won’t know whether it’s actually a striped stingfish, a whitetail goblinfish, a painted stinger, or a completely undescribed species until they are able to study it.
