Remington could have to dish out nearly half a billion dollars after a judge’s decision to have the company replace nearly 7.5 million defective trigger mechanisms at no charge.
Multiple guns from the Model 700 series are defective and even fired without pulling the trigger in multiple cases.
Despite recent events, Remington still denies any of the allegations and says the guns are safe. Critics of the settlement are saying that Remington downplayed the entire case so others wouldn’t submit more claims.
U.S. District Judge Ortrie D. Smith made the decision to have Remington fix some of the guns instead of none at all.
“By approving this settlement, the Court facilitates remediation of the alleged defect,” Smith wrote. “That result may save lives and reduce the risk of injury to others.”
So that means there may still be a number of potentially defective guns out there, putting owners at risk.
Remington’s Model 700 is covered in the settlement, other firearms from their line-up: Seven, Sportsman 78, 673, 710, 715, 770, 600, 660, 721, 722 and 725 rifles, and the XP-100 bolt-action pistol.
Any owners with guns considered to old to retrofit, including the 600, 660, 721, 722, 725 and XP-100, will receive a voucher for $10 to $12.50.
