If you thought you felt an “earthquake” in Daytona Beach on Saturday, you aren’t alone.
The Geological Survey reported an earthquake with a 3.7 magnitude around 4 p.m. just east-northeast of the popular beach town.
In reality, the so-called earthquake was the result of an explosives test on the USS Jackson, a new U.S. Navy ship.
“The shock trials are designed to demonstrate the ship’s ability to withstand the effects of nearby underwater explosion and retain required capability.” according to a Navy statement.
The earthquake turns out to have actually been the shockwave of a 10,000-pound explosive charge. It was set off several hundred yards from the ship in order show the ships ability to withstand underwater explosions.
