Get ready to see the greatest wahoo video (ever) featuring wahoo after wahoo, including a 100-pound monster “underwater zebra” filmed from a drone with a Go-Pro Hero 3 Black Edition, and a bonus blue marlin. Bryan Fengler and Ben Begovic make up the YouTube team of Slayer Circuit, and they just re-wrote the book on capturing quality wahoo video.
“This was a fishing trip of a lifetime. Crossing over to the beautiful cobalt blue waters of Great Harbor, the goal was to catch Wahoos while High Speeding. Little to say we did more than that being rewarded with a Blue Marlin as well. The video includes a wahoo that we captured on film from the drone that was 100lbs and a blue marlin as well. Fishing with Captains Chip Sheehan and Tim Maddock the recipie for success was there aboard the 42′ Invincible.”
We’ll let their photos and their story do the rest.Â
We departed Boynton Beach Inlet Friday afternoon around 2:00pm for the 5 hour ride to Great Harbor Marina. We were greeted with incredibly calm seas aboard a chariot of a vessel which was a 42′ Invincible. We arrived and checked in at customs and decided to get everything ready for Saturday morning and head over to fish the incredible waters of “Hole in the Wall.” Known for it’s big fish we were all excited to be there in the morning.
I was at awe watching everything fall into place. How certain lures were rigged, what knots to tie, length and ratings for shock leaders, crimps, color selections for skirts, and even lead sizes. It almost felt like you walked into a candy store and wanted every flavor. From pinks and oranges, to black and purples we were bound to figure out what they wanted. Islander combinations, Black Barts, and some lures I can’t even pronounce were all in the mix.
We loaded down the boat the night before for a quick start early morning to start looking for the kingfish with stripes. Put the spread out at 7:45am and started ripping around with all 5 electrics going.
30 minutes later into the search we get our first fish of the trip. A solid 45-50lb fish. From there I wish I could break it down wahoo by wahoo but I can’t. Put it this way, the bite was ON. Countless doubles and triples with too many lead bites to count and 3 cutoffs. One pass we had all 5 electrics tight but only caught 2.Â
The most incredible part of the trip happened right after noon. We catch a double and put the lines back out. We make a pass over one of the marks on the GPS were we just caught the past 2 fish. We spin around and make the pass and sure as hell we get another bite, but this time from a very nice fish. Ripped over 700m on the Diawa MP3000 before it finally wore out the first run. We keep tight decide to clear the lines in effort to catch the fish. The high-line bait comes in and both LPs as well. Little Luke was on the last Diawa getting ready to grab the lead when out of the blue we all see a big bite right on the pink and purple combo 50ft behind the boat. We all knew it was a billfish. Tim yells to for Luke to drop back and 10 seconds later the reel is ripping line and in the distance we see the man in the blue suit show himself. What a way for Luke to hook his first blue!
So we have a double header on with a nice wahoo and blue marlin. With all the commotion going on we put the heat on the wahoo and start gaining on him as the blue marlin is grey-hounding out in the distance and I decided to deploy the drone hoping to get some great ariel footage. We still haven’t seen the fish after 10 minutes of fighting. A couple minutes later Tim gets the led to the boat and begins the tug of war. Little Timmy’s in the back with the gaff and Chips on the wheel. Finally get some color and Timmy goes, “IT’S A SHARK!” Tim takes a couple more wrap to get a clear look and then it hit everyone when Tim hollered, “NO IT’S NOT IT’S A GIANT GET ANOTHER GAFF!” The fish comes boat side and Glen runs over with another Gaff after Timmy stuck it the first time and it did not even budge! Two gaffs in it and a lot of strength later got the beast in the boat. Giant fish, in fact a fish of a lifetime at 100lbs. Screams and cheers followed until Luke finally got our attention to get back to the blue marlin! We get back and start working Lukes fish to get it boat side. Grab the bill, get a quick shot with the camera and topped it off with an Ariel shot from the Drone!
We finished by 3:00pm and caught 13 wahoos and a blue marlin. We went back to Great Harbor to fuel up, fish in the morning and head back home. The next morning we finished off with another 5 wahoos again up to 50-55lbs. Truly and amazing experience.
