Freakish ‘Alien Fish’ Caught; Identified as Rare Albino Swell Shark

More often than not, when you’re out fishing you have some idea of what you might be catching that day depending on your setup and bait. That all goes out the window when what you reel in looks closer to something you’d find in a galaxy far, far away than something you’d want on your dinner plate.

An ‘alien fish’ was caught earlier this week off shore in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, before being released after some pictures were taken. This strange looking catch had white and pink skin and a massive, swollen belly.

Caught by a client of Captain Jaime Rendon and revealed by Pisces Sportfishing Fleet, the little guy was later said to be an albino swell shark after pictures had been studied.

It was clear the creature was most likely a shark after discovering it had multiple rows of teeth and three gill slits on each side of its body. Even so, this shark had strange, greenish eyes and since most sharks have 5-7 gills per side, classifying exactly what it was proved difficult.

‘I was really surprised, but what caused most impact were the eyes, so strange,’ Rendon told Pisces.

It turns out that swell sharks are known to suck in air and water in order to expand their belly as a defense from being swallowed, explaining its engorged appearance, according to the Daily Mail.
